Our Ii Week Schedule

Man did we have a fun "Ii" week!  I only focused on the short /I/ sound because I think it is sooo sooo sooo important to focus on one sound at a time, not just one letter at a time.  When my son came home from preschool and told me that the letter e is for eye doctor... I almost passed out!  Oh, but that is a different story!  Later on in the year, we will learn the long /I/ (like ice) and teach a few of the phonetic patterns like i_e that make that sound.  The main thing is that the child learns the sound.  We are focusing on reading, not spelling at this age.

I couldn't find a ruler ANY where in our house so we used the measure your baby ruler we brought home from the hospital.  My son really loved measuring things even though he needed a lot of assistance lining  up the zero and reading all of the numbers off.

Short I words

CVC words- that is teacher talk for consonant, vowel, consonant.  These are usually the first words that I teach students how to read on their own.  (short vowels that is)

This is what Miss Thang decided she wanted to do while we were having school.

Making letter I's.  We used blocks and stacked the appropriate number on the cards.  I just happened to have these left over from my classroom but you could easily make your own cards.

How to make your own magnetic pom poms

I've been seeing TONS of activities that use magnetic pom poms.  I've always avoided them because I didn't have any but this week, I thought I would give it a shot.  Here is what you need... 

1. Pom poms (you can get a small bag at Target for around $2)

2. Magnetic Tape (I have no clue how much this was but it goes SUCH a long way)

3. Scissors

Cut the magnetic tape into small squares... a little smaller than your pom poms

Remove the tape and stick it to your pom pom and PRESTO!!

That's it folks... as easy as that!  Some people have trays that they only use for magnetic activities but I just use whatever I have under the oven.  (Note- the nonstick types don't work as well)
